What are Motor Skills? Why are they important for children?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gross motor skills<\/strong> are those which\nrequire whole body movement, using the bigger muscles of the body to perform\neveryday functions, such as standing and walking, running and jumping, and even\nsitting upright. They also include hand-eye coordination skills (like throwing,\ncatching, kicking), as well as riding a bike or a scooter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fine motor skills<\/strong> involve the engagement\nof small muscles in very deliberate (\u201cfine\u201d) movements, usually involving hands\nand fingers in coordination with the eyes. Developing fine motor skills\nrequires a lot<\/em> of practice. Without fine motor skills, a\nyoung child will struggle with movements that come naturally to an older\nperson, like using a pencil, using scissors, tying their shoes, and many other\nimportant daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
